Read John 14:15-26. God in us – the Holy Spirit.

V 15.  “If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

As if the mystery of the Three-in-One God were not enough, we now have the extraordinary matter of God living in us by the Holy Spirit! He is in us – we are in him- and he will never leave us! Is it really possible that God lives in us? Remember the use of plural words? He is in us – the ‘us’ plural, the Church. It is as if the Church, as a body, is so united with God that we are invited into fellowship with the Trinity! This is not some future state to which we might possibly aspire; it is the here-and-now spiritual reality of our existence. ‘For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.’ (Ephesians 2:6 ) We are seen as so united with Christ that we already have our place in the heavenly realms along with Christ.

So the issue is not what is our destiny, but rather are we living now in the light of our total union with Christ for eternity? It is so easy to get this the wrong way round, as so many people do. They say ‘If I live a good enough life now I might make it into Heaven’ But God says ‘You are ‘in Christ’ and the Holy Spirit is in you, so your place in glory is established – so now live accordingly!’
