Read Luke 2:25-35

V 35  He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.  As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.

Mary took in Simeon’s song too. I wonder what she thought over the years as she recalled this prophetic song by Simeon that speaks of sadness and even suffering on her part.

All of those who are parents have aspirations for their children; we would like them to do well, perhaps even become famous for their outstanding achievements. We certainly want them to be happy and lead fulfilling lives. So what might Mary have made of the apparently contradictory messages she had heard? This baby was to be a Saviour of the nation, indeed of the world – and yet many would oppose him, and she herself would endure sadness as a result. How would that sit with you, going round in your mind for 30 years?

Mary, this infant, this toddler, this teenager, this young carpenter, holds a key part in the eternal plans of the heavenly Father. Be patient Mary, for even you are destined to suffer in some way as you watch your son reach maturity and embrace Heaven’s purposes.”
