Read James 3:13-18

v 17.  But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.

What marks a person out as wise, as opposed to being clever?

Just reflect on this list of qualities: ‘first of all pure ..  peace loving .. gentle at all times, .. willing to yield to others .. full of mercy .. good deeds .. shows no favouritism ..  always sincere.

You do not have to pass exams or go to University to develop these qualities. It is important however to note that again we encounter gentleness, now as one of the element of a wise life. Proverbs 3 reminds us:

Joyful is the person who finds wisdom,

the one who gains understanding.
For wisdom is more profitable than silver,

and her wages are better than gold.
Wisdom is more precious than rubies;

nothing you desire can compare with her
She offers you long life in her right hand, and riches and honour in her left.
She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying.
Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her;

happy are those who hold her tightly.

To be gentle is to be on the pathway to wisdom. It speaks of being in tune with God and sharing something of the character of Jesus.

Whatever you think about your own character right now, God wants to help you towards a life of gentleness and has given you the Holy Spirit to help you and strengthen you on that pathway.
