v 16. “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”
Here we are, right at the end of the Bible, and David crops up yet again. Jesus, the Bright Morning Star, describes himself as the source of David and the heir to his throne.
He is the source in that he is the creator and giver of all life, and the foundation stone on which the Kingdom of God is founded. David, if we can put it this way, was God’s idea brought into being by the power of the Son. David was not an accidental and useful blip in the history of God’s people; he was part of God’s plan to establish an earthly Kingdom in Israel, and prepare the way for a heavenly kingdom ruled over by Jesus.
So Jesus is also the heir to David’s throne for all eternity. The unconditional promise to David was ‘Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’” ‘ (2 Samuel 7:16) The same promise is repeated to Mary in Luke 1:32 ‘ He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” ‘
No wonder the connection between David and Jesus gets such prominence!
