v 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.
Lest you get the wrong impression about practising the presence of God, it does involve the totality of our being – and that includes using our minds. Knowing and loving God better is not a mindless, vaguely hopeful kind of experience; it involves thinking, reading, praying – in fact giving time to the endeavour. It does not just happen because we want it to; we give ourselves to the practise.
Good friendships and marriage are much like that – to be successful and joyful they have to be worked at and given time. Loving relationships don’t just happen; they have to be worked at. They are more than just a warm emotion, and a vague hope they will benefit us somehow. So it is with wanting to know and love God better (which I hope you do!).
Our search to know and love God more deeply will involve the use of our minds. Not the brain-box, academic knowledge kind of mind that is seeking an A+ in bible study, but the mind that says decisively ‘I know and therefore I will obey’. That is the pathway to joy. Is that for you?
Lord, I do want to know, love and obey you more fully. Please develop in me a mind that understands and a will that gladly obeys. AMEN
