Allowing the Holy Spirit to lead.
v 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
It is the Holy Spirit who sustains our Christian lives; we only live spiritually because He brought us to life, enabling us to appreciate the presence of God with us. So it is the Holy Spirit who is able and ready to guide us through life. Our natural humanity – the flesh – has different ideas about our lifestyle. V 19 is quite explicit ‘When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: ‘ The list that follows in vv 20-21 is a catalogue of evil behaviour; the contrast in vv 22-23 is amazing! The Holy Spirit leads us to a totally different pattern of life, producing qualities in us that mark us out as members of God’s Kingdom.
It is vital therefore that we ‘follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. ‘ This is the practical issue that faces every Christian, every day: how in the hurly-burly of everyday life can I follow the Spirit’s leading? How can I distinguish the voice of the Holy Spirit in the cacophony of 21st Century life? Let me offer four quick suggestions.
First: Keep reading your Bible. The Holy Spirit inspired the writers of scripture and has the power to interpret it to you today.
Then: Learn to be quiet – not easy in our day and age -but it is in the quietness that the Holy Spirit speaks to you as you focus on listening.
Next: Ask yourself questions about what you think you are hearing. Does the leading you receive make for holy living and the welfare of others?
Finally: Decide prayerfully to respond to whatever the Holy Spirit is leading you into. Don’t delay, do what He says.
