Read Ephesians 5:1-14

Following the example of Jesus.

v 2  Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.

How easy is it to recall incidents in the life of Jesus? Spend a few moments right now bringing a few to mind.

Done that?

Now how do those incidents demonstrate the love Jesus had for the people around Him? Do they reveal anything but love, in fact?

Into my mind sprang a picture of Jesus weeping outside the tomb of Lazarus, and the response of the crowd recorded in John 11. ‘Then Jesus wept.  The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” ‘ This was the outstanding feature of Jesus’ life and ministry – He loved people. If you are to follow the example of Jesus then, love has to be the major and evident characteristic of your life as people get to know you. It is the first fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22, and it has to be cultivated. I suspect it does not come entirely naturally to many of us, so we have to reflect on how we respond to people and their circumstances and ask ourselves whether love has been apparent in that response.

Talk to God about it as you pray; be honest with yourself about how you feel you showed love; freely acknowledge your real, deep-down feelings about people; be determined to let love show in your words, tone of voice and actions. Love of this kind has to worked at and cultivated.
