v 23. Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!
How we would love to be able to predict the future accurately!
I’m sitting here today in the aftermath of storm ‘Dennis’; do you remember that back in February? There were pictures of flooded homes and roads on TV, the breakdown of public transport arrangements were well-reported on the news and most of us wanted to stay at home indoors in the dry. Of course we remember that! But do you also recall this bit of news? ‘ Meanwhile, to improve weather forecasting services, the Met office has announced that a supercomputer which can predict weather and climate 18 times faster than current technology will be developed at a cost of £1.2 billion. ‘ We can’t really handle bad weather, but the aim is to find out when it is likely to happen. That would give more people a chance to prepare for it – like get bigger umbrellas and move the furniture upstairs!
Jesus warned His disciples about the destruction that awaited Jerusalem – so the disciples had a question. ‘ “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?” ‘
However, Jesus could look beyond the tragedy that awaited Jerusalem; He knew that the world was moving towards a great climax when He Himself would return to reclaim all power and authority. So He goes on to say ‘Then everyone will see the Son of Mancoming on the clouds with great power and glory. ‘
This is an event that many in the past have tried to predict. They have claimed to have had some kind of ‘Special Knowledge’, or that they have been able to interpret the signs in the world around them. Some have even put dates and times to Jesus’ return and have gathered followers around them to watch for it! But Jesus never goes beyond this general warning, in fact He was adamant about foreseeing the events, but not the timing. He said ’“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert! ‘
No amount of computer power will tell us the time of Jesus’ return, but He was a Man like no other, with a clear view of the end times.
