v 21 I, the Lord, will make my home in Jerusalemwith my people.”
The promise of a new relationship with God and of His presence among His people.
So we come to the climax of this wonderful little book. The plan can be summarised: Repentance – acceptance – restoration – Gift of the Holy Spirit – Final Battle and Judgement – God coming to live with His people.
This final chapter of the book presents us with the last stages of this process. The call to battle in v 9, ‘Say to the nations far and wide: “Get ready for war! Call out your best warriors.’
And then the judgement in v 12, ‘Let the nations be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I, the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all. ‘
And the book finishes with the picture of God at peace with His people in Jerusalem. ‘I will pardon my people’s crimes, which I have not yet pardoned;
and I, the Lord, will make my home in Jerusalemwith my people. v 21
This little book of Joel is an extraordinary prophecy about God’s dealings with humanity throughout all ages. It takes us through from the need for repentance and a restored relationship with God, to God’s final rule on the redeemed and restored earth. It carries us well beyond the calamities of the present age and then into the eternity of God’s presence with His people.
