Then Jesus showed up ….. at the wedding
v 7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.
I’ve never seen people drink so much wine – and so fast! The groom was getting desperate; he could see stocks were running low and we were only halfway through the meal. Just supposing the wine were to run out; that’s unthinkable, he’d never live it down. You just can’t finish the celebration with no wine; he’d be the laughing stock of Cana. They would all think ‘How mean can you get? He didn’t buy enough for us to have a good time.’ When I took the last lot through to them I felt the dipping jug scrap against the bottom of the pot – we’re in for an embarrassing moment folks!
Then this guy – I gather he was a carpenter from down the road in Nazareth – came along with his mother. She wanted him to help in some way. I had no idea what she had in mind, but he – poor guy – was told he ought to do something; and he was only a guest! What on earth did she expect him to do for goodness sake – how could he conjure up enough of the stuff to satisfy everybody.
Then he said the strangest thing. ‘See those big water pots – yes, the ones people usually wash their hands in. Well, go fill them to the brim with water.’ He seemed to take charge for the moment, so we set to and got enough water from the well to fill six of these great pots. ‘Now fill your wine jugs from the pots and take them to the MC’ he said. That’s a crazy idea I thought – you can’t finish a wedding with everyone drinking water! Anyway, we shrugged our shoulders and did as he said. And you should have seen the bosses face, he turned to us and beamed. ‘That’s the best wine we’ve had all day – that’s great – you kept the best wine for the final celebrations.’
What do you make of that? They said the carpenter’s name was Jesus, from Nazareth. If he can do that sort of thing, I’d like to know him better.
Now I’m one of Jesus’ followers He has made a huge difference to my life – for the better! Have you experienced that in your life yet?
Lord Jesus Christ, I do want to know you better. Come into my life, strengthen faith, and help me to live as one of your people.
