“Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them! “Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.

I can imagine the positive nature of all the beatitudes up to this point, but hold on – this last one is a sting in the tail! Who mentioned the idea of being persecuted for doing the right thing? That was not really my expectation of following Jesus, and it doesn’t seem right.

Surely, you might think, doing the right thing by God shouldn’t lead to persecution. Sadly, all of history shouts to us that the good guys don’t have an easy time. If they crucified Jesus (and can you imagine anyone better?) think what might happen to lesser mortals. But read on!

This is the only one of the Beatitudes that carries a promise!

Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven.

Read Matthew 5:1-12 in the Good News Bible.

Jesus saw the crowds and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them:

“Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor;
    the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!
“Happy are those who mourn;
    God will comfort them!
“Happy are those who are humble;
    they will receive what God has promised!
“Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires;
    God will satisfy them fully!
“Happy are those who are merciful to others;
    God will be merciful to them!
“Happy are the pure in heart;
    they will see God!
“Happy are those who work for peace;
    God will call them his children!
10 “Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!

11 “Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.
