v 11. “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
This brings us to the very brink of Jesus’ public ministry – the coming soon of verse 11 is fulfilled just 2 verses later, when we read in v 13 Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. This was the moment the whole of creation must have stood on tiptoe to see! The Son of God, creation’s sustainer and central pillar, was about to be revealed to humanity in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. A few privileged people had caught a glimpse already, as Simeon did when Jesus was brought to the Temple as an infant (Luke 2:29-32), but now, in the full glare of John’s public announcement, Jesus takes centre stage to fulfil God’s plan of redemption. God the Father adds His authentication of Jesus’ identity in v 17 … a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
After waiting 30 years, Jesus, with his life rooted in eternity, was openly declared to be the ‘dearly loved son.’ Jesus was about to step out of the shadows of the carpenter’s workshop to challenge the powers of darkness,
The Lord is coming becomes the Lord has come.
