v 17. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
God publicly authenticated Jesus’ ministry and His status as the Son of God. Everyone was to recognise that God had planned Jesus’ role in the world. John was the messenger that God used to prepare the nation for the coming of the Messiah, so it is not surprising that he too faced conflict with the Jewish leaders. His confrontation and denunciation of them, recorded in vv 7-10, shows the kind of people they were and how they might react to Jesus appearing on the scene.
