The Jews were devoted to keeping the Law of Moses – he was one of their great heroes. Now Jesus takes what Moses had written as the Law of God, which they had applied only to external actions and re-applies it to their inner nature – their thoughts and desires. He was claiming to be the true interpreter of what Moses had written. Such a far-reaching claim would have antagonised all the religious authorities.
