v 12. Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realise you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”
It would certainly have caused a flutter when Jesus said ‘You hypocrites! ‘ to the Pharisees. (v 7) But that is exactly what they were – they were playacting a religious life. It was only skin deep and not touching their inner lives and motives. They were people with soap-washed hands, but corrupt and selfish hearts. Beware – hypocritical living wasn’t confined to the First Century! Nothing destroys the Christian’s credibility like hypocrisy – and people are very quick to notice when lives do not match up to a profession of faith.
