Read James 3:1-12

vv 8-9. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behaviour, SLANDER, and dirty language.  Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.

Slander is saying or writing lies about other people that will damage their reputation. This is even covered in the law of the land; slander and libel can lead to court cases resulting in fines or imprisonment.

These last two things mentioned to be stripped off can both come through the use of the tongue. Today’s reading from James’ letter reminds us in verse 2 that ‘ Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. ‘The issue is one of self-control, no wonder that is listed in Galatians 5:22 as part of the fruit of the Spirit, ‘But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Self-control is something with which many folk wrestle. If that is you, make the prayer of Psalm 141:3 your own prayer today.

Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.
