Read John 2:1-12

v 11. This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

Having set the scene and the themes that will run through the story, the action begins. And what an unexpected start it is! It is not a huge tale of lives changed to follow Jeus and believe in Him, it is all about a wedding party when things seemed to be going wrong. Yet – that IS the story of Jesus! For sure, the followers now had some reason for believing and trusting Him, but the big story is of Jesus putting things right. That is what love always does. Mary seemed to sense that Jesus could get the wedding back on an even keel by doing something that would change the course of events. The families involved in planning the wedding would have been able to look back and say that Jesus put things right for them. Whether we call that love or kindness simply doesn’t matter; it is Jesus putting things right when they seemed to be going disastrously wrong. I call it Grace-Love. It is God, motivated by love, revealing His kindness to undeserving people.

This too is a scene-setter for the rest of the story. Love is not just some kind of emotional high, it is action that changes things for the better. In this case it was a miracle, and the disciples looked back on it as a moment when Jesus parted the clouds for them and they caught a glimpse of His glory – and believed.
