vv 9-10 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
The With-God life of freedom needs perseverance; notice the emphasis
let’s not get tired of doing what is good….. if we don’t give up … whenever we have the opportunity. This verse speaks volumes about continuing in the Christian life and sticking with the process of always doing good. This is the very thing that so many struggle with; they begin well but the routine of carrying on is a different story. The excitement and challenge of a new start carry us along for quite a while, then it all begins to become a bit routine, and dare I say it, dull.
Maybe you have been in that place in your experience of being a Christian.
What once excited you, the singing, the movement, good and faithful friends, and so on, now hold little that stimulates your thinking and everyday being. Five or ten years down the line from an Alpha Course and routine has set in, and the stimuli to get out and do good are waning allowing you more time to do what YOU want.
Freedom is only fruitful when it is free of the selfish motivation that we once had and can focus on being an encouragement to others.
So here is a project for the coming days: make a note of the opportunities you have to become a blessing to other people. Maybe you prayed personally with them, or did something practical for them like the shopping, or even took them a meal when the going was tough. Don’t get into the way of thinking that helping others ties you down, in reality it sets you free!
