v 16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
What Paul is saying is “If God is willing to do that for me, He can and will do it for you!” Frankly, I would rather hide some of my past – so don’t expect any dramatic disclosures sometime soon! But neither will I hold back from talking about it if that might help someone going through similar experiences. There is no pride in saying “That’s how it was with me.” provided it draws attention to the immense grace of God rather than my life and character. You see, God has not merely had mercy on me in forgiving me, but He has been in the business of transforming me so that I am no longer what I then was. I am not just a ‘Guy with a past’, I am a Christian believer with a present and a future. Hurrah for God’s mercy! I am now an example of what God can do for you too.
Here is a huge challenge for each of us. Paul was a serious example of a transformed life. He was willing to let his life shine out as a model of God’s grace and kindness. Whatever my past, does my life now demonstrate God’s grace at work? Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:16) come to us today with fresh vigour. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
