v 11. In that day I will restore the fallen house of David.
I will repair its damaged walls.
From the ruins I will rebuild it and restore its former glory.
Thank you, Amos, – you have suddenly taken the longer view. Exile there will be, but there is also a ‘Beyond Exile’ view. God is determined to keep His promises; the Kingship of David’s rule will be restored!
When you pick up your bible to read it – which I hope you do rather than just take what appears on line – I wonder if you take a look at the footnotes, or even a different version from time to time. If you do, you might find a cross-reference quoted for these verses. In Acts 15 we find James quoting these verses from Amos in this fashion: ‘‘And this conversion of Gentiles is exactly what the prophets predicted. As it is written: Afterward I will return and restore the fallen house of David. I will rebuild its ruins and restore it, so that the rest of humanity might seek the Lord, including the Gentiles— all those I have called to be mine. ‘
James took it to foretell the rebuilding of the Kingdom, including Gentiles in the new Nation. I think Amos was inspired to look beyond the return of the Jews to Israel and to see the gathering in of Gentiles to the Kingdom of God under the Kingship of David’s successor, Jesus.
What a long view Amos had – even if he was not aware of it himself. He was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write for his own generation – and ours!
