v 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
This is a Psalm of contrasts – and what a huge contrast between the people described in verse 1 and those in verse 2. There are those who follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers, and those who quietly meditate on the things of God.
Pause to reflect for a moment on those who’s advice you follow, or with whom you hang about, or conversations you join in with, (and we might today add absorbed by social media!) How does that compare with the time we spend thinking, meditating, chewing over, what God has said about Himself and the world around. I fear for the mental health and spiritual well-being of some folk who seem absorbed by social media. They seem so concerned about missing out on the latest post; the phone is there beside them at mealtimes, by the bedside at night, in their pocket while shopping or conversing with friends. The digital conversation seems more important than the friend or family member standing alongside. Have you ever felt yourself relegated to the sidelines while your friend alongside MUST reply immediately to a Whatsapp message? I can well-imagine Psalm 1 being parodied to fit our digital age!
So how does God feel when we prefer to be screen watchers and message writers and so miss out on times with Him?
I want to challenge you today to put your phone/tablet aside for a while, regardless of its insistent beep-beep (let it wait) and deliberately give solid time to reflect on the contrasts of this Psalm. What might God be wanting to say to you, and how can you message back to Him in prayerful meditation?
