v 2 This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
There are all sorts of special groups to which I belong – or have done at some point. I had my identity card that allowed me access to a particular RAF base; I’ve got my Covid passport; I’ve got my Waitrose Card which gives me money off certain offers; I’ve got my bus pass for free travel at certain times; etc. I only have to show my pass and I am entitled to various kinds of special privileges. More to the point, I have confidence that these passes actually work.
I am confident too that my relationship with God is secure. I have taken God at His word, believing that what He has said, He will do. No great mystery about that even although how it will all work out is still a bit of a mystery.
So here we are as followers of Jesus with exactly the same confidence in God that the writer of this Psalm had. Our faith is remarkably simple. Sure, we don’t know everything about Him yet, but one day we shall see Him and know Him as He knows us. Paul put it like this:
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
