v 39 When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.
Let’s end the week by thinking about what Jesus meant when he talked about ‘Living Water’. John, when writing this Gospel, understood that Jesus had been talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit. (I wonder if Jesus explained that to the woman at the well, and the other villagers who came out to listen to him?)
Jesus’ promise was that everyone who believed in him would receive this living water – the Holy Spirit – and that includes you if you have believed! This is not some vague ‘You might one day receive the promised Holy Spirit’. No – once you believe you DO receive the Holy Spirit. No further conditions, no special ceremony, no theological training, no money changes hands and not even promises of loyalty and endeavour are required. As a believing child of God, with your faith and hope in Jesus, that promise is for you. The reality of it doesn’t always dawn on people when they first express their faith in Jesus; His coming into life may not initially change your feelings or your experience of life. But it is the Holy Spirit who gives new life – a life which develops over the years and changes the kind of person you are.
How aware are you of the Spirit in your life? Make this your prayer today:
Holy Spirit of God, make me aware of your presence with me today.
Empower me to live a holy life.
Instruct me in the way of Truth.
And join me, in love, with all your people. AMEN
